WHAT IS GAMIFICATION?

Photo: Overview Skutskär by Tension

Photo: Overview Skutskär by Tension

This has to be the year where you’ve heard the word Gamification the most? Am I right?
So what is Gamification? Well, how many of you play games? You play on your smartphone, TV or computer - or maybe you play games on all of them. Anyway, it is something most of us do, we just love games. The "gaming world" now includes almost all of us, and that’s really cool! We can all be a part of it!

So, why not use games in our daily work? Or in line at our local grocery store? Or when you're driving a car and want to use as little gas as possible? Gamification is used to increase engagement and it can be applied in many different kinds of industries. A simple example would be to enable the users of a system to earn different rewards, by collecting points when performing tickets or tasks. Gamification can also be used for educational purposes, where users will be able to quickly learn a system without reading from a manual, and get feedback faster. There is a bunch of different examples - and if you have more fun at work, then creativity and efficiency increase!

An example on how we at Tension work with gamification is Stora Enso Skutskär. They wished for “something” that kept the employees motivated, more focused and excited at the pulp manufacturing plant. They wanted to modernize their system for ease of use, and be more attractive to young people applying for jobs. And those new employees and substitute workers also had to find their way around the factory maze. And let’s not forget the safety issues! All this sounded like a real challenge.
To help them stay on top of their game, we at Tension developed a gamification project together with Stora Enso’s Fiber departement manager Lasse Aspelin. The result is an interactive 3D map of the factory's all pipes, machines and people, with routine information and any emergencies clearly displayed on a big screen. In the near future we hope to add more exciting things to the project so that the employees can start to earn rewards, get feedback quicker and to have more fun at work!

If you have questions about this, please contact Tofva in marketing here at Tension.

DALA PRIDE BREAKFAST AT THE TENSION HOUSE

IMG_2596.JPG

Our Pride breakfast is served!

IMG_2592.JPG

Linnea Risinger visited us from Falu Pride culture association.

IMG_2595.JPG

Glitter, flags and Love was splashed all around our big conferens room in the house aka Challenge. This is where the event was held.

Some of PlaygroundSquads supervisors enjoyed the range of breakfast options.

Everyone has a right to love, be who they want to be and do what makes them happy.
This is something we think is very important at the Tension house. So during Dala Pride week, we really wanted to do something special. Special we did, we held a Pride breakfast for anyone who wanted to join. Or as a clever person at Tension said on why a Pride breakfast was a great idea -
"We can't change the world right away, but we can take small steps together."

We had an idea of getting people together on Friday as a final touch before the Pride parade on Saturday. So we did! At 8:30 we filled our biggest event room with guests and had the pleasure of having Linnea Risinger here from Falu Pride culture association during our breakfast. She talked about Dala Pride festival as it is a intersectional norm critical festival that was launched in 2012 and how it has grown bigger every year since then.
Their goal is to awaken new thoughts from the visitors and question invasive thinking patterns, and they want to do that with personal stories, unexpected knowledge in unexpected forms, meetings between different kinds of people, cultural experiences, and by connecting different issues with each other so that we suddenly see new ways of dealing with ourselves and others.

Linnea also talked about what it can be like as a queer gamer, how people treat you online and women in the gaming industry. What an image of the classic gamer looks like and what the statistics look like this year for women in the industry. Have we become more women in the game industry or has it start to stagnate. What do you think? We know. What we also know is that according to the Swedish Game Industry Developer Index Report of 2016 the number of women working in the industry today is more than the number of men who worked in the industry ten years ago.

After a great breakfast we continued with a discussion regarding all of the topics we touched during Linneas speach, this time together with a local newspaper.
We made plans for the future. Exhiting things are coming up and we are very proud to be a part of that journey. It is time to roll up our shirt sleeves and get to work!

We want to stay in the front row. Exactly where we belong.
If you want to be a part of our next event or have questions about this event. Feel free to contact us.

A big THANK YOU to Linnea Risinger who came to the event! We are so happy for that!

If you are planning a visit to the Technical Museum in Stockholm you have to try out "The Ore Game" developed by us at Tension. In this mini-game you work in a modern mine and your mission is to break ore and get it all the way to the surface! You have about 3 minutes from start to end. It is a fun game to try out when visiting the exhibition.

The Mine is a permanent exhibition at the National Museum of Science and Technology in Stockholm and it has been going through a major makeover recently. It now houses an entire new area where we you can interact with simulators, games, explosives and powerful machines. Something we are very happy to be a part of!

2015 omsatte Turismen i Dalarna ca 7,1 miljarder.

Race Car Driver + PlaygroundSquad = Cool collaborate

Hannes Löwenberg & Race car driver Rasmus Mårthen

Hannes Löwenberg & Race car driver Rasmus Mårthen

Race car driver Rasmus Mårthen came up with a cool idea for the PlaygroundSquad students in February, one of them would get to design his new Race car helmet. He wanted the helmet to represent Dalarna in a cool way, but maybe with something else than the classic Dalahorse.
The students had about a month to create a design and then Rasmus Mårthen would pick the one he thought would look great as the design for his new helmet. The lucky winner was Hannes Löwenberg. He´s a first year artist at PlaygroundSquad.

We asked him a few questions after he found out that Rasmus Mårthen choose his design.
How does it feel that he picked your design for his new helmet?
- It feels great, alot of people are going to see his helmet and it´s a good way to get my name out there.
Why did you want your design to end up on Rasmus Race car helmet?
-I´ve always been interested in racing and i think it´s really fun to design so I thought it was a cool idea from start.
What inspired you?
-
The theme was Dalarna so i wanted the helmet to have a Eurasian eagle-owl on it since that´s Dalarnas landscape animal. I was thinking about the eagle-owl´s eyes, they have a strong yellow-orange color and that would really make the design pop out. The eye is also focused and gives a very dedicated feeling to the design and Rasmus Mårthen likes to win, so I thought that would be a awesome combo for his helmet.

This is what the helmet design looks like. Designed by Hannes Löwenberg, a first year student at PlaygroundSquad.

RUCKUS RUMBLE created by PlaygroundSquad students.

In Ruckus Rumble 2-4 players fight each other using swords, shields and a versatile set of special abilities. Ruckus Rumble is a local PVP game, meaning everyone is playing against each other in front of the same screen. This leads to laughter, screams and the kind of social interaction associated with classic board games.

The game is playful and whimsical, yet hectic and unforgiving. What starts out as a friendly and jovial challenge, can quickly turn into a maelstrom of malicious gloating and personal vendettas – just like a good board game!

Ruckus Rumble was created by students at PlaygroundSquad in Falun, Sweden. PlaygroundSquad has educated in the field of game development since the new millennium, and is part of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s unique academic game development programme, PlayStation®First, which provides education partners with access to PlayStation development hardware and the opportunity to publish on the PlayStation®Network.

The release of Ruckus Rumble stands as testament to the relevance of practical-oriented education in the field of game development.

Luke Savage, Senior Academic Development Manager at Sony Interactive Entertainment, says:

“What better calling card is there for any young game developer than to show off their first game published on PlayStation?  PlayStation First is all about inspiring the next wave of talented developers, and Ruckus Rumble is a great showcase of what students at PlaygroundSquad are capable of.”

The Big YH Day

On April 28th we had a event at Tensionhuset about higher vocational studies here in Dalarna. This was held by Dalarnas YH organizer, in collaboration with Region Dalarna and the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth.

During this day about 80 people from trade organisations, career consultants, vocational guidance offices, politicians, and also some representatives from the gaming industry came together to discuss the meaning of YH here in Dalarna and the impact that the higher vocational studies here (YH) in Dalarna have on our region. Did you know that 8 out of 10 students already have work when they end their studies at the YH collages here?

The main purpose of this event was to market the twenty-something different collages of higher vocational studie programs (YH) that Dalarna offers and to create some new collaborations within Dalarnas region. If more people knew about these different collages of higher vocational studies more people would have jobs right after their studies end, which would be good for everyone including Dalarna as a region.

Sofia Jarl who is the vice chairman of Region Dalarna spoke about the importance of our higher vocational studies (YH) here in Dalarna and how important they are to the region. There is a great demand of labour now and we need to be ahead of our game, she says.

Tension puts the Swedish countryside on the map

As many of you already know Tension was one of the companies that sponsored project Stugan last year. This year we’ll proudly do it once again.
Our CEO Magnus Björkman and project manager Jon Bylund helped finding this year’s location; Bjursås, in Falu municipality. Twice as many people have applied this year, and the selection process is well underway as all applicants are screened carefully.

The Stugan organisers report that people from 43 different countries - "all continents represented save for Antartica" - are eagerly wanting to participate in this year’s event.

Stugan 2016 will run from July 8th until August 27th and is supervised by leading individuals in the Swedish game industry, representing DICE, Good Bye Kansas, Mojang, Resolution Games, Avalanche Studios and Snowprint Studios among others.
“Senior games industry leaders from Sweden and also other countries will visit the cabin and hold lectures and workshops focusing on several different areas of game development.”

With great expectation and excitement we look forward to see what this year of project Stugan will produce!

About Stugan:
Stugan is a non-profit organisation that initiates and oversees an annual accelerator program for aspiring game developers. The word “Stugan” means “the cabin” in Swedish, and is also a throwback to the name of the first Swedish commercial computer game made in 1978. Stugan offers the expertise of the established Swedish game industry, and aims to provide opportunities for upcoming game developers through development, publishing, marketing and more, to ensure a successful games launch. Stugan supporters - amongst others - include Oskar Burman, General Manager of Rovio Stockholm; Tommy Palm, CEO and co-founder of Resolution Games and Karl Magnus Troedsson, VP of group strategy at Electronic Arts (EA).

PlaygroundSquad's education manager Linnea Agné is one of the most powerful ladies in Dalarna!

Recently the newspaper DT (Dalarnas tidning) had an article about the most powerful ladies in Dalarna. One of those presented in the article was PlaygroundSquad’s own education manager Linnea Agné.

Linnea started her career at SVT where she worked for eight years. She started as a broadcasting producer’s assistant and broadcasting producer at Gävle-Dala News in 2001.
She worked at different areas of SVT after that, for example in Leksand where she was involved in the development of the program Perspektiv. This was a sign language-oriented show, and here she worked as broadcasting producer.
The show was pre-recorded, but made to look like a live show. ”We developed different solutions for different things in this production. At that time you didn't think that this was something innovative, You just wanted to do as good program as possible.”, says Linnea about the show’s format.
Basic sign language and the first experience in a managing position was something Linnea learned during this period.

Linnea wanted to try something new after this and started to work in Norrköping in bigger tv-productions. Shows she worked with includes Vi i femman, Fråga doktorn and Go kväll, but she also worked with OB-productions (outside broadcast). During her time at SVT Linnea got selected to be involved in SVT’s Junior board, this was something the ones with greatest potential got selected to be a part of.

After she got her kid she wanted to move back home to Falun, and it was there she met Magnus Björkman – the headmaster of PlaygroundSquad. Magnus had a bold project in progress and Linnea thought that the game industry sounded exciting. So in 2010, Linnea started to work at Tension Graphics – her current workplace, and one focused on game development and the education of people for that very industry.
”It is really fantastic and fun to see how people grow during their education, and also the close relation we have with different companies in the industry like Avalanche, Rovio, King and DICE”, says Linnea about her current line of work. “It is really fun to put Falun and Dalarna on the map in the game world, for example with the Stugan project where we (Tension Graphics) were involved.”
She finish with a message to all girls out there:
“We want more girls here! Give the game industry a chance, because it’s an incredibly exciting and creative industry with big potential.”

The game industry + tourism

This Tuesday Region Dalarna held an event in Tensionhuset, on the topic
The game industry + tourism. The workshop – which included both panel discussions and lectures – gathered people from Dalarna from a variety of areas, including commercial, industrial, educational, public service and the games industry.

After some mingle, Magnus Björkman (Tension Graphics), Lotta Magnusson (Destination Dalarna) and Susanna Heldt Cassel (Högskolan Dalarna) welcomed everyone and together presented their thoughts about the game industry and tourism as a joint concept.
One good example of how the game industry and tourism can mutual benefit from cooperation is the Falun2015 Live app that Tension Graphics created together with Ericsson for the World Championship in Skiing event held in Falun in 2015.
The big discussion during the day was how to keep the technologic development going, and through that attract people to visit or even move to Dalarna.

If and when technology such as this would transcend from solely being an event-oriented novelty, to becoming an integrated part of everyday life, was raised and debated during the panel discussion – when gamification (or as Magnus would put it; coolification) becomes an integrated part of our experience when traveling, or even when we partake of an event from the comfort of our sofa.

Representing the games industry was Per Strömbeck from Dataspelsbranschen, Mats Persson and Magnus Björkman from Tension Graphics. To represent and speak for Dalarna’s commercial and industrial interests was Mikael Sundström from Ericsson, Susanne Timsjö from PIIA and
Jonas Nyberg from Södra Dalarnas Sparbank. Jonas Nyberg was also present, representing
Falu Kommun
.
