Breaking Boundaries with 5G: A Global First in Mobile Sports Experiences

In 2018, the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang served not only as a global sporting event but also as a testing ground for groundbreaking technology. TENSION Graphics, in collaboration with Ericsson, played a pivotal role in the creation and launch of the world's first public 5G-powered sports app for Korean Telecom: KT OmniView.

The Challenge

As Korea prepared to host the Winter Games, a bold vision emerged: to demonstrate the potential of 5G technology in a real-world, high-traffic environment. The goal was to create a mobile experience that delivered ultra-fast, real-time access to Olympic content directly to fans' smartphones, allowing them to navigate and enjoy the games like never before.

The Solution: A 5G Fan Experience

TENSION Graphics designed and developed the user interface and visual system for KT OmniView, creating an immersive and intuitive experience for both tech-savvy fans and first-time users. The app provided real-time athlete tracking, multi-angle live video feeds, 3D maps of venues, and interactive schedules—all powered by a 5G network.

This project marked a significant step forward in fan engagement and mobile broadcasting, effectively transforming the way audiences experience live sports.

The Result

KT OmniView was successfully deployed during the Olympics and widely recognized as a key demonstration of 5G's potential. Thousands of users could experience ultra-responsive video streaming and real-time updates, setting a new standard for live event interactivity. The collaboration between TENSION, Ericsson, and Korean Telecom not only showcased what was technologically possible but also laid the foundation for future 5G-powered fan experiences around the world.
